Quarantine Diary 3.1
(The Third Day)
10 September 2020
My sleep is all over the place - just typical jetlag.
So after being wide awake much of the night, I was woken mid-morning by a knock at the door and two uniformed police officers (wearing masks of course).
They were just checking I really was in my room and not out partying.
The pair, armed with a clipboard, asked for my name and birthdate (which is not an instant recall for me when I first wake up!).
They were very friendly. I don’t know how often these more official spot checks will occur?
The hotel corridor has a security guard and police cars are permanently parked at the foot of the building. And the front of the hotel is fenced off from the public.
Escaping would be difficult.
In the afternoon I had my second phone call from a nurse checking I had no corona symptoms and was feeling okay.
She was very chipper and repeatedly reminded me that Australians say “arvo” instead of afternoon without a hint of irony or self-parody.
“That’s great - well enjoy the rest of your arvo.”
A pretty uneventful arvo and evening ensued, doing a bit of work and watching the film Interstellar.
The scenes in which many years elapse in mere hours (due to relativistic effects of a nearby black hole) had some resonance with my current situation.
I also shot this sunset timelapse, starting about 3.30pm.
The camera is pointing west (of course) but the buildings of Adelaide’s CBD block the horizon and Adelaide’s coastline.
Calls and messages from loved ones have been appreciated - and it was nice to see little Audrey who earlier this week had some dental surgery back home!
