Glacier Hike

Once again we visited the mighty volcano Eyjafjallajökull, which is covered by an equally mighty glacier.

We’ve walked on glaciers before - most notably the Khumbu Glacier at Mt Everest.

But much of the Khumbu Glacier is strewn with rocks… This glacier was mostly exposed ice and required crampons on our walking boots.

It was a strange adjustment at first, simply trusting the spikes to grip the ice. But we got the hang of it.

The early part of the glacier was covered with gravel and ash, exposed by the melting… The but it became progressively more icy.

It was striking just how much ice was melting - and how the rivelets of meltwater were combining to carve into the ice itself.

Drinking the water was also fantastic, even if it required a glacial push-up.

Other drinking methods were available.

Seeing the ferocity of the meltwater, it is easy to see how Iceland’s waterfalls are sustained.

Speaking of which, we visited another one nearby. This is Skógafoss.
