A Trip to Iceland
Thought I’d share some photos and videos from a trip to Iceland in July 2021.
There will be glaciers, waterfalls and an erupting volcano.
The adventure started in the capital, Reykjavík, home to most of Iceland’s population.
The church below (Hallgrímskirkja) is the city’s most striking landmark…
The interior was worth a look - mainly for the crazily impressive pipe organ and an elevator ride to the tower look-out.
Reykjavík is also famed for the Icelandic Phallological Museum (Penis Museum) and we stopped there to part with more tourist dollars.
It was actually much more sciencey and less gimmicky than I imagined.
Hats off to the mighty sperm whale (left)!
Next was the famed Blue Lagoon spa, a short drive outside the capital.
This striking lagoon has steamy, milky water which appears blue to the eye.
It’s a tourist mecca and inside was seething mass of people - but the lagoon itself was big enough to absorb the masses and it was quite peaceful and enjoyable.
Face masks and a drink from the swim-up bar were standard procedure.
The lagoon is not natural - it’s actually a huge concrete pool which takes wastewater from the nearby power plant (below).
But the wastewater (from which the power plant extracts steam for its turbines) is a serendipitous cocktail of chemicals with “restorative properties”.
The picture below is just some overspill by the side of the road as you approach the lagoon.
